WaPo's article by Dan Balz on education today (Microsoft's Gates Urges Governors To Restructure U.S. High Schools.) Three words: Don't bother with it. (Damn and I was excelled in college math.) It has references, no links, and information is confusing.

Try the Seattle P-I article, here. At least it states where the stats come from - the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education. It also don't have the crisis, epidemic, "the world's going to end" air about it.

A couple of items I found while I frustratingly tried to find the stat source, before seeing it in the Seattle P-I, were the current TIMSS and this summary document on college graduation rates from ACT. Here's a report by NCPPHE called "Measuring Up 2004"; not quite sure this is the source. I'll be reading it shortly.
